Holy Great Martyr and Healer St. Panteleimon - Russian Orthodox Cathedral of St John the Baptist, Washington, DC stjohndc.org
St Panteleimon was stretched on a rack, thrown into a cauldron of boiling tar, and cast into the sea with a stone around his neck. He remained unhurt. Finally, the Saint was tied to an olive tree and beheaded. The tree became covered with fruit. Many who were present at the execution believed in Christ.
His venerable head is now located at the Russian monastery of Saint Panteleimon on Mt. Athos. St Panteleimon is venerated as a protector of soldiers. His intercessions are credited withbringing victory in battle, including two 18th-century Russian naval victories over the Swedes, which occurred on his feast day.

Saint Panteleimon's (27 July/ 9 August) birth name Pantoleon, means “a lion in everything”. His name in baptism, Panteleimon, means “all-merciful”, is manifest in the veneration of the martyr as a healer.
As a physician, St Panteleimon invoked the envy of fellow physicians for treating people without charge. When he began healing Christians in prison, a furious emperor Maximian (284-305) gave St Panteleimon over to repeated torture and attempted executions. Each time St Panteleimon survived, more and more people came to believe in Jesus Christ.
